Is Hypnosis Backed by Science?

Yes. Researchers using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have observed measurable changes in brain activity and communication during hypnosis.

One area showing reduced activity is the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC). This region helps us monitor our surroundings, detect conflict and critically evaluate what is happening. This change is consistent with becoming deeply absorbed in an experience while everyday distractions temporarily become less important.

Researchers have also observed increased communication between the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, which is involved in focused attention and decision-making, and the insula, which plays a role in body awareness, emotions and internal sensations.

At the same time, communication can decrease between the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and the posterior cingulate cortex, an important part of the brain’s default mode network—the system associated with self-reflection and ordinary mind-wandering.

These measurable changes help explain why hypnosis can create such focused attention and why imagined experiences can feel remarkably vivid and meaningful. In this absorbed state, the mind can become more responsive to carefully chosen therapeutic suggestions supporting positive changes in thoughts, feelings and behaviour.

Hypnosis is neither sleep nor mind control. You remain aware, capable of responding and able to make your own choices throughout the experience.

Hypnosis is a genuine psychological process accompanied by observable changes in how the brain functions and communicates. It allows focused attention, imagination and therapeutic suggestion to work together toward a desired outcome.
